watchdog looks like it might a good solution. I think this should be an optional setting, but probably on by default.

I took a look at what you've got, it looks like, what you have so far watches for file changes while the application is open and refreshes those entries or adds new ones if detected? I don't know if you intend to expand on that, but in this issue I was talking about TagStudio finding files that have changed names/locations or been deleted while the application was closed, which would require creating a background process added your computers startup.
