The source code is a hello world program. Who do you think you are fooling?

EDIT: Like @dbarkelew mentioned, since this project is licensed under GPL-3.0, it's completely unethical, virus or not.
Since I accidentally overlooked the license, I apologize for justifying this case beforehand.

This project is published under the GPL-3.0 license, so the code needs to be available to everyone that gets a copy of the application. It says clearly "Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it". What they are doing by with holding the code is unethical and can get into legal issues. Virus or not.

I'm going to create my own chatgpt desktop app that also steals API keys, but mine will actually be good.

I accidentally missed that. You're right.
Since this is the case, I agree that it's completely unethical.

You might want to report the user for this: https://github.com/contact/report-abuse?report=lencx+%28user%29

Also, "virus" is a bit misleading. "Stealing OpenAI keys" may or may not be true (I suspect not, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), but "violating the GPL" is definitely true.
