Random SIGBUS crashes with Radeon graphics #14642
Comments
I've been seeing something similar on an RX 550 here, except in my case it only seems to happen in multiplayer (that server has a lot more going on than any of my singleplayer worlds, not sure if that might be related), it usually only seems to happen after at least an hour of playing, often more, and sometimes it just exits without printing anything (doesn't always show "Bus error"). I haven't had it crash when running in GDB yet. |
The first log you posted contains a "generateImagePart" warning message that was only added in 5.9.0-dev, so something doesn't add up. In any case it'd be most useful to reproduce this issue on 5.9.0-dev with a debug build and the |
Ah right, the first paste was the latest one I got thrown via gdb with the latest git release of minetest and indeed those "generateImagePart" lines are not present with 5.8.0-arch bin release. Anyway it doesn't look it has something to do with the crash, since I got a similar output with other versions. Anyway these are the final lines of the output of minetest-5.9.0-dev after rebuilding it using
Both test runs are performed in the same server but in different map locations. debug.txt doesn't seem to give any useful information. It just keeps complaining with generateImagePart and OpenALSoundManager warnings in the same way as before with Release build. |
Here anegostudios/VintageStory-Issues#3877 (comment) it says that a kernel update fixed it. I think we should close this issue as an upstream issue. |
As this issue is no longer observed after upgrading kernel to 6.9.1 I now consider the issue as resolved. |

Summary
Minetest crashes randomly while playing in any server. Sometimes it happens just seconds after joining a server, or after some minutes playing on it, no matter what you do. debug.txt doesn't give any clue of the issue at the time of the crash:
So I tried opening minetest using gdb, and this is what it throws when the crash happens:
In another context, gdb returned also a more detailed backtrace after the crash:
I tried with flatpak version of minetest and building it from source as well, giving always the same results. Also tried downgrading minetest back to 5.7.0 (binary and built from source), mesa to 24.0.3 version and glibc to 2.38 and still no luck. The thing is that it always worked with these versions, but it coincides with the fact that I used nvidia graphics back then, while I recently switched to AMD Radeon because with nvidia graphics I had lots of issues in other programs that use graphics (e.g. Blender), being now minetest the only program (for now) where I have problems with AMD graphics; and I would judge that there must be some bug related to radeonsi_dri.so according to what gdb returns when it crashes.
Steps to reproduce
Open minetest and log in into any server or create a local server and log in it. Then just take a walk around the virtual world for a while until it hangs and crashes.
