Why does update() get ignored when the user is unauthenticated?

I found the problem code here:

Why does next-auth ignore the update call if unauthenticated? We are currently patching the !session portion out of the next-auth implementation, to get around this issue.

Is there any way we can add this as possible (maybe as an options flag to the update method?

It seems relatively simple to re-implement if you want to replicate it -- just check if the user is authenticated before calling update. The inverse is much more difficult.
